Treating Cancer with Fructose? and Pain Management Using Biofeedback

Hi Everyone!

This year I have been really blessed. I have had two wonderful vacations during our winter. The first I mentioned last month, to Oaxaca, Mexico and then a week ago I returned from visiting Southern Italy and Sicily with my twin 13-year-old grandsons. It was a wonderful trip, the weather was sunny and 15 or 16 degrees Celsius every day. We saw wonderful sights, climbed Mt. Vesuvius, walked around Pompeii and other ancient sights, and it was wonderful seeing things from a young person’s perspective.

It is back to cold weather now, but I see signs of spring all around. The Hellebore I planted last year is sending up buds! Very exciting. But the same day I took the hellebore picture, we had an ice storm north of Toronto – it was beautiful.

Potential Cancer Treatment?

This month I was very excited to find an article titled “Retooled Immune Cells Use Fructose to Turbocharge Themselves Against Cancer”, by Jim Stallard. He was writing about the findings at Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center where biochemist and bio-engineer Dr Kavyan Keshari and other researchers have found that immune cells might be reprogrammed to use the body’s fructose, a naturally occurring sugar, as an energy source that supercharges them to fight cancer. This sounds like wonderful news.

The article discusses the different types of sugars that are in the body – sucrose, glucose, and fructose. Sucrose is converted into glucose and fructose, and the body’s cells generally use glucose as a fuel source. However, if glucose levels are low, cancer cells use a protein called GLUT5 “to usher the fructose into the cells and metabolize it as quickly as if it were glucose”. The study describes using “cell engineering” to modify various types of immune cells to also use fructose and thereby improve their effectiveness. They have used the therapy successfully in mice.

Pain Management

I also watched an episode on Gaia this month that talked about the development of new devices that will improve our lifestyles. One of the items that caught my attention was a Scenar device (Self-Controlling Energy Neuro-Adaptive Regulator). A note on the Enfield Osteopathic Clinic website says it is “a highly effective way of relieving pain, and aids recovery from a range of conditions”.

Scenar is similar to TENS machines and other electrotherapy machines but differs from them in that it includes a two-way biofeedback. The Enfield site says “The Scenar machine is held against the body and emits short electromagnetic pulses or waves, which travel along the central nervous system to the brain. The pulses are very similar to the body’s nerve signals so the brain reacts by producing neuropeptides and endorphins, which reduce the sensation of pain”.

Another thing that has happened this month is that I had an article published in SAGE-ING: the Journal of Creative Aging. I had one published last year as well. I thought I should mention it this time because it is an inspiring magazine that is free on-line.
