We finally have had a few really beautiful warm days and, looking at my garden with all the plants poking up out of the soil, I am really excited. Spring is my favourite time of year. I have already planted my bowl of pansies and am enjoying them whenever I look out the window.

Looking Ahead in Science and Medicine

This month, I’ve run across a number of very interesting  articles about advances being made in science and medicine that I want to share with you. What I have found is that scientists all over the world are working on amazing projects that will change how medicine is practiced, if not right now, then in the foreseeable future.  Here are the articles I’ve chosen.

Regenerating Heart Muscle Cells in Mice

In 2023, scientists at the Max Plank Institute for Heart and Lung Research published the results of a study that they did on regenerating heart muscle cells in mice. I picked up this info from their website. “After birth, the human heart loses its regenerative capacity almost completely. Damage to the heart muscle, e.g. due to a heart attack, therefore usually leads to a permanent loss of function in adults. Scientists from the Max Planck Institute for Heart and Lung Research have now shown for the first time in mice that a change in the energy metabolism of heart muscle cells enables heart regeneration. In the animals, heart function could thus be restored to a large extent after a heart attack. The study is groundbreaking and could enable completely new therapeutic approaches.”

Reversing the Effects of Osteoarthritis in Mice

A recent study by scientists at Stanford Medical Centre has discovered a new way to treat joint degeneration from osteoarthritis. They discovered a protein called 15-PDGH (termed a gerozyme because its prevalence increases with aging) that is a regulator of aging. From their website, “Gerozymes are a major force behind age-related loss of muscle strength in mice. Blocking the function of 15-PGDH with a small molecule results in an increase in old animals’ muscle mass and endurance. Conversely, expressing 15-PGDH in young mice causes their muscles to shrink and weaken. The gerozyme has also been implicated in the regeneration of bone, nerve and blood cells.”

How About 3-D Bioprinting of Corneas?

In 2019, South Korean researchers from POSTECH (Pohang University of Science and Technology) and Kyungpook National University developed a process for creating a new cornea using 3D-bioprinting. From their website – “The human cornea is organized in a lattice pattern of collagen fibrils. The lattice pattern in the cornea is directly associated with the transparency of cornea ….. The research team successfully produced transparent artificial cornea with the lattice pattern of human cornea by regulating the shear stress to control the pattern of collagen fibrils.”

Fast forward to late 2025 at the Rambam Eye Institute in Israel, and “the world’s first transplantation of a fully 3D-bio-fabricated, cell-based corneal implant. The procedure was carried out on a patient who was legally blind in the treated eye, marking the first time anywhere that a corneal implant grown entirely from cultured human corneal cells, rather than donor tissue, has been successfully transplanted in a human being.”

A Nasal Spray to Help in the Treatment of Alzheimer’s Disease?

In 2024, researchers at the University of Texas Medical Branch (UTMB) published an article about “a significant advancement in the fight against neurodegenerative diseases such as Alzheimer’s disease and dementia. The study, published today in Science Translational Medicine, introduces an innovative nasal spray treatment that has shown promising results in clearing harmful tau protein build-up and improving cognitive functions in aged mice models with neurodegenerative diseases.” Although promising, Dr Vineet Gupta of UTMB said in September 2025 interview that it is likely still 6-8 years before doctors will be able to prescribe it.

The Potential for Biofield Therapy (Energy Medicine) in cancer treatment

A very recent blog on the website for the Institute of Noetic Sciences (IONS) talks about the potential for using energy medicine in the treatment of pancreatic cancer. This really interests me because this is the work I do. From the blog, “A rigorous new four-year study from The University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center found that biofield therapy (BT), another name for energy medicine, reliably and significantly slowed the growth and spread of pancreatic cancer in preclinical models. In repeated studies with cells and mice, BT reduced cancer metastasis by more than 50%, effects researchers said were comparable to chemotherapy but without toxic side effects.  BT appeared to influence cancer at a fundamental level, including cellular energy systems, electrical signaling, and gene regulation pathways.

Because these experiments were conducted in cell cultures and animal models, the findings demonstrate effects of BT independent of placebo effects.  Pancreatic cancer is one of the most lethal and treatment-resistant forms of cancer, and while further research is needed, this study could open new doors for how we understand cancer and its treatment, and how we approach health and healing more broadly.”
